I have been told that I am a "walking miracle". You may ask, why is that? My answer is found in my story. This story began 12 years ago when I was diagnosed with Lupus. It's a moment in time that I will never forget, but before we take a walk down memory lane; allow me to share some education about this disease.
Lupus is an inflammatory disease caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues. It is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body. There are more than 200,000 cases in the US per year. Lupus is two to three times more prevalent among women of color. There are three main types of Lupus: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE which affects the entire body), Discoid Lupus (affects the skin) and Drug-induced Lupus (caused by certain medications). I'm sure these facts are alarming to you. I thought the same thing back in 2008 when I was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).
I didn't understand the severity of the situation because my symptoms started off very minor. I had a reoccurring rash on my right eyelid for months prior to my diagnoses. It was painful, annoying and sometimes embarrassing. I never thought in a million years a small rash could lead to a chronic illness. It took several months for doctors to figure out what was going on. Then one biopsy changed my entire life.
After being diagnosed with Lupus, I was placed on three different types of medications. That may not seem like a lot; however the side effects were too much to wrap my mind around. In fact one of the medications caused birth defects. It was debilitating and I didn't want to spend the rest of my life battling through medication side effects. Plus my husband and I wanted to start a family in the future. Honestly, this is what inspired me to pray and ask God for help.
I reached out to my pastor at the time and he encouraged me to speak with a guest minister who had a similar experience. I spoke with the guest minister after church service one Sunday. She prayed with me and gave me some practical advice. She also told me something that would turn into a monumental moment and would lead to the most important message of my testimony. She said "I believe God is going to use food as medicine to heal you!" At the time the words she shared felt very general, but I had no idea that it would be the start of my wellness journey and miracle message.
Immediately after that conversation I took faith filled action by educating myself about the Lupus. I looked for alternative resources to treat the disease naturally and I found a support community with the Lupus Foundation of America. I changed my diet to a mostly plant based diet and I hired a personal fitness trainer. After months of intentional effort I was able to successfully stop taking all of my medications. I am so grateful to share that I have been in remission, medication free for 8 years now! My husband and I have also been blessed with two beautiful boys (ages 8 and 5). All glory be to God! This is why I am called a "walking miracle."
I know that Lupus affects people in many different ways and some of their struggles are worse than others. This is why I believe God has placed a passion in my heart to be a beacon of hope for others in the Lupus community. Healing comes in many different forms through the power of JESUS CHRIST! All you have to do is ask him for wisdom and he will show you the divine steps to healing for your situation (practical & supernatural).
If you were recently diagnosed with Lupus or maybe you have lived with it for some time now. You may be feeling:
Shocked that this happened to you.
Relieved that now you know what you're dealing with, but still wondering what to do.
Worried about being on medications for the rest of your life.
Misunderstood by family & friends. because you don't look sick.
Overwhelmed by all the research you feel you need to do or have done.
Tired of your body turning on you and your inability to do the things you used to do.
Desperate for support and alternative solutions.
Take heart, you are not alone! There is hope! Wellness is a journey, not a destination. It's up to you to TAKE ACTION (faith filled action) wherever you are on your journey. If you need a little help taking that 1st step, I'm right here for you. I will gladly share education, resources and the support you need on this journey.
